Why choose Kiln Dried Logs?

Kiln dried logs are becoming an increasingly popular choice of fuel. Stove manufacturers, stove installers, and fuel suppliers are recommending kiln dried logs for any wood burning appliances. Including; open fires, multi fuel stoves, fire pits, chimeneas and multi fuel BBQ’s.

Kiln drying is a process which forces the wood to dry quicker by sucking the moisture out of the log. The log moisture content is the main reason why these logs burn so well. To find out more, keep on reading…

Kiln dried logs provide consistent quality each time you buy

Unlike seasoned logs, kiln dried logs provide consistent quality every time you buy them. This is because they have been dried thoroughly, and their moisture content tested upon completion. These logs have a moisture content of 20% or less. The low moisture content allows for a clean burn, hot heat and what’s more, keeps them light and easy to move.

They have a high heat output

Again, due to the low moisture content, kiln dried logs are able to achieve a higher heat output than seasoned or green logs. The moisture content of a log has the biggest effect on the calorific value, the calorific value is how the heat output is measured. Put simply, the lower the moisture content, the hotter and more efficiently the logs will burn.

They save money long term

Although kiln dried logs are more expensive to buy than seasoned or green logs, kiln dried logs save money in the long term. This is because you will require less kiln dried logs to achieve the same heat output than other logs.

They cause less damage to your burning appliance

As mentioned at the start of this article, more and more stove manufacturers are recommending the use of kiln dried logs. Because of the high temperatures that kiln dried logs can achieve, they are able to burn off the residual moisture and sap that logs leave behind. Burning off this residue prevents excess soot or tar building up in your appliance. Excess tar can be corrosive, and potentially damage the lining of the flue.

Eco friendly

Along with the above benefits, kiln dried logs are also considered to be more environmentally friendly. Burning logs allow us to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and it also reduces the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.
